Terms and privacy

These are interim terms for the Ask MORIS private beta, written in house. They are not a lawyer's document and they do not pretend to be one. A full set of terms and a full privacy policy replace them before this is open to the public. Everything below is true of the service as it runs today.

What this is, and what it is not

Ask MORIS answers you under MORIS, an artificial conscience: a model reads what you wrote and fills a fixed set of fields, a gate with no model in it weighs those fields and returns a verdict and a weight, and the model that answers you is bound by that verdict. Every answer is generated automatically and may be wrong.

It is not therapy. It is not medical, psychological, financial or legal advice. It is not a crisis service and it is not monitored by a person. If you are in crisis, please reach a human being: in the United States, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or text HOME to 741741. Elsewhere, contact your local emergency number or crisis line. A check runs on every message and will show you these numbers rather than an answer when it fires.

You must be 18 or older to hold an account. The Resonance Institute, LLC accepts no responsibility or liability for anything you read here, or for any decision you make after reading it. You are the one deciding. That is the point of a conscience rather than a nanny.

Your words

Your words are not stored by us. Your conversation lives in your own browser's storage, on your device. It leaves the device only to be answered, inside the request, and only to the parties named below. Nothing you write is written to a database or a file by us, and the table we do write has no field capable of holding text.

The Resonance Institute's own service, hosted on Vercel (United States), receives your message and the recent turns of your conversation in order to answer them, and keeps neither.
Anthropic receives your message twice: once as the model that reads it into the fields, and once as the model that answers you. The page names both.
Supabase holds your account and nothing else: your email address, your password in hashed form, and your confirmation that you are 18 or older. It never receives a message, a conversation or a reading.
Upstash holds the counts described below, keyed to a one-way hash of your account that cannot be turned back into you.
Google Fonts serves the typefaces this page uses, so Google's servers see your network address and that this page was loaded. They receive nothing you write.

What we record, which is counts and never contents

One row per exchange, with a fixed shape that has no room for your words in it:

The verdict, its weight, how many concerns fired, how many considerations were weighed, and how many of the nine fields your words did not state.
Timings and token counts, and which models read and answered.
Which turn of the conversation it was, and how many turns came with it. Not their text.
The page you arrived from, as an origin and a path with the query string always removed, and an approximate location taken from the request itself: country, region, and city only when a second exchange from that city exists the same day.
A one-way hash of your account. Not your address, not your email, not your name.

Signed out, an anonymous limit is counted against a random identifier your browser keeps. It is not tied to you and is not looked up.

Your account

An account exists to count your usage and to bill you if you choose a paid plan. It holds identity and a count, and never a message. The free plan is ten turns a UTC day.

You can delete your account with one click on the page. Deleting removes the account and its counters. The anonymous counts described above stay, because they hold a hash with no identity behind it and removing them would corrupt a record of what the service did while telling us nothing about you. Your conversations are yours to clear from your own browser at any time, by deleting a thread, and deleting the account clears every one of them too. You can also export every conversation to a file: your browser writes that file to your own device, and we never see it.

Because your conversation lives only on your device, we cannot recover it for you, and it does not follow you to another device or another browser. That is the cost of the promise, and it is stated here rather than discovered later.

Changes

This is a private beta and it changes. Material changes to what leaves your device, or to whom, will be reflected here before they take effect. Questions go to The Resonance Institute, LLC.
